Combined with the global financial recession and the company’s frustration about the limitations of the contemporary technical regulations in developing technology relevant to road cars, BMW chose to withdraw from the sport, selling the team back to its founder, Peter Sauber. The company officially withdrew from the series after 2021 to focus its resources on carbon neutral technologies, although an arrangement was made for them to continue supplying the Red Bull teams until the end of 2025, with the Honda-built engines winning further titles in 2022 and 2023. The move is a nod to their partnership with Honda Racing, who have manufactured the team’s engines since 2019. That partnership will end this seaosn, though, as Honda will partner with Aston Martin for 2026, with Red Bull launching their own in-house engine manufacturer as a replacement.It is one of two Formula One teams owned by conglomerate Red Bull GmbH, the other being Racing Bulls.
